A fifty five cow suckler herd, based on the South
Devon and crossed with Limousin, are kept to keep the pastures well
grazed, allowing the sweeter grasses to thrive for the benefit of the
sheep.
A small herd of Luing has recently been introduced. |
|
They are comfortably housed from December to May
and fed high dry matter silage. 20 tons of cereals are used for maintaining
the herd. Straw is purchased to assist with the production of well composted
manure. No compound fertiliser is used. Antibiotics are limited to emergency
use in the case of a sick animal, under veterinary supervision. Homeopathy
is practised.

The calves are born in the Spring and early Summer,
when the days are warmer and grass is plentiful for the cows to milk
well, and are sold to organic outlets at 18 months of age.
